What Do Counties Do

Counties provide a variety of services to the general public.

Elections

Elections

Elections are the cornerstone of our democracy, and your county plays a critical role in making them happen. Counties are responsible for making sure elections are fair, free, and accessible to all eligible voters. From voter registration to counting ballots, counties work hard to ensure that all voices are heard in every election. County election officials prepare ballots, facilitate voter registration, and organize and oversee polling places.

The election commissioner or county clerk oversees the administration of elections. This official, often the county clerk, is responsible for ensuring that elections are conducted fairly and according to the law. They work with other county officials and community partners to make sure everything runs smoothly on Election Day.
