Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen says poll workers and county election offices did a remarkable job handling Nebraska’s first statewide election with voter ID. Poll workers were able to reference voter ID training material available at the polling places and their county election contacts to resolve minor issues throughout the day.
“Nebraskans should be proud of their county election officials who stepped up to the plate to successfully implement voter ID,” Secretary Evnen said. “We owe a debt of gratitude to our friends and neighbors who served at polling places and election offices to ensure ballots were cast securely and independently.”
Some county election offices are finishing up counting approximately 13,000 ballots. More than 333,000 Nebraskans took part in the primary election. Based on preliminary evaluations, the Secretary of State’s Elections Division estimates that less than six hundredths of one percent (0.058%) of voters didn’t have acceptable IDs and voted provisionally – meaning their ballots have not been counted yet. For their votes to be accepted, those voters will need to present their acceptable IDs to their county election offices by the end of the business day on Tuesday, May 21.
Unofficial election results are posted at electionresults.nebraska.gov. As with every statewide election, the Secretary of State’s office and county election officials will conduct a post-election audit to verify the accuracy of the results. Additionally, county election offices will do their own checks and balances, such as canvassing their results. Members of the Nebraska State Board of Canvassers will convene in June to certify election results of the May 14 primary election.
