County Officials' Tips for Staying Safe in Winter Weather

Local leaders are experts in preparedness and safety. Here's some insight from two Nebraska emergency management officials on how you can stay safe.

Grand Island-Hall County Emergency Management Director Jon Rosenlund said that since temperatures are dangerously low, take steps to protect yourself, your neighbors, and your pets:

- Limit time outdoors & dress in layers
- Check on those who may need extra help
- Keep your home safe: let faucets drip, open cabinets, and maintain heat
- Bring pets inside & provide shelter for animals

A little preparation now prevents big problems later. For the latest weather updates, follow your local office of the National Weather Service and your county emergency management agency.  You’ll find more information at www.bereadynebraska.com.

"Stay warm. Stay safe. Take care of each other."

Lincoln-Lancaster County Emergency Manager Jim Davidsaver also gave a few tips for navigating the extreme conditions:

"Accurate, timely information leads to good decisions, promoting your personal safety. To stay safe during extreme winter weather, monitor the local weather forecast and plan accordingly. Plan ahead to have the necessary resources and supplies to be self-sufficient for at least three days and seek information from trusted sources that meet your specific needs. Lancaster County has a coordinated, cooperative network of dedicated employees working to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all county residents while also promoting continuity of operations. It has been my experience that this holds true for all Nebraska counties."
